Kentucky has emerged as a pivotal player in the aerospace manufacturing industry, a fact that is little known by most within the Commonwealth. Leveraging its strategic location, skilled workforce, and supportive business environment, significant growth has come to the localized interpretation of this industry. Our hope is to help highlight the substantial investments made to Kentucky’s aviation industry, made up of a robust network of aerospace companies in addition to a strong emphasis on education and workforce development.
Current Landscape
The aerospace sector in Kentucky is a cornerstone of the state’s economy. As of recent data, the state is home to over 100 aerospace-related facilities, employing more than 23,000 individuals. Since 2017, our state has announced approximately 40 aerospace-related projects, culminating in over $1.1 billion in investments and the creation of more than 2,800 jobs. In 2022 alone, the state exported nearly $10.5 billion in aerospace products and parts, underscoring its significant role in the global aerospace market.
Northern Kentucky stands out as a critical hub for aerospace manufacturing, hosting numerous Tier 1 and Tier 1 aerospace suppliers. With an aerospace corridor between Dayton and Louisville, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) has become one of the fastest-growing cargo airports in North America, only drawing additional appeal for aerospace manufacturers.
Further east, the aerospace cluster has seen remarkable growth, with an 183% increase in aerospace products and parts exported since 2012. 52 aerospace-related facilities employ nearly 15,000 people, with educational institutions offering multiple technical and degree programs related to aerospace, ensuring a pipeline of skilled workers to support our industry.

Notable Aerospace Companies in Kentucky
While far from an exhaustive list, several prominent aerospace companies have established operations in Kentucky, further establishing the state as a key industry player.
Safran Landing Systems
In September 2024, Safran announced an expansion of its Boone County facility, creating 92 high-wage jobs. The group produces and refurbishes carbon brake disks, with the additional manufacturing of wheels and brakes for both civilian and military aircraft. Their Walton site often supports aircraft like the Boeing 777, Airbus A320, and C-17 military aircraft.
L2 Aviation
Only a few months ago, from the time of this post, L2 Aviation unveiled plans to establish a $12.2 million manufacturing operation, also located in Boone County. With the aim of creating 250 jobs, L2 Aviation plays a key role in avionics design and will undoubtedly feed into operations at nearby CVG.
GE Aerospace
With facilities in Madisonville, Kentucky, GE Aerospace is a significant contributor to our state’s aerospace sector, specializing in crafting crucial engine components. In March of 2024, the group announced additional investments to the tune of $650 million, $6.7 million being invested at its Madisonville site.

Educational Initiatives& Workforce Development
Kentucky was once known for its strong emphasis on education and workforce development to support its growing aerospace industry. In 2015, of the 98 high schools across the United States teaching aerospace and aviation skills, 25 were located in Kentucky. While various challenges have impacted these educational opportunities, DreamFlight Charities is working diligently to come alongside communities in creating thriving aviation communities that will continue to inspire and enable the next generation of industry workers.
Economic Impact & Future Outlook
The aerospace industry has significantly boosted Kentucky’s economy. Over the past seven years, over $3.2 billion in investments have been made, bringing with them over 7,100 new jobs. In 2023, the state’s aerospace exports exceeded $13 billion, cementing the state as one of the largest contributors to the industry.
Looking ahead, Kentucky is poised to continue its trajectory as a leader in aerospace manufacturing. Curating strategic initiatives, along with ongoing investments in infrastructure and education, will be vital in meeting the evolving demands of the aerospace industry. With communities throughout the Commonwealth committed to a comprehensive approach to economic growth, encouraging and fostering growth in the aerospace sector will hopefully be a priority in the years to come.
