Recently, DreamFlight Charities had the privilege of participating in a regional 4-H Summer Camp that brought together youth from Taylor, Adair, Wayne, and Green Counties for a week of learning, leadership, and hands-on experiences.
Among the many educational opportunities available to campers, DreamFlight Charities Executive Director Drew Underwood led an aviation and drone education course that introduced 160 students to the exciting world of flight. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, students explored the science, responsibility, and career opportunities that aviation can provide.
The Science of Flight
The course began with an introduction to the four forces of flight – lift, weight, thrust, and drag – and how these forces work together to make aircraft and drones fly. Students quickly discovered that aviation is much more than simply operating an aircraft; it is a field rooted in science, technology, engineering, and critical thinking.
Drone Fundamentals
Campers also learned the fundamentals of drone operation, including basic flight controls and maneuvering techniques. For many students, this was their first exposure to unmanned aircraft systems, providing an exciting glimpse into one of the fastest-growing sectors of the aviation industry.
Safety First
Equally important was the emphasis placed on safety. Students were introduced to essential preflight procedures, learning how professional pilots and drone operators inspect their aircraft before every flight. Discussions also focused on situational awareness – understanding what is happening in the surrounding environment and recognizing potential hazards before they become problems. Pilots in Command (PICs) and Visual Observers (VOs) then worked together to navigate a simple and fun obstacle course.
Another key concept introduced IMSAFE, an acronym used as a personal risk-management tool to evaluate a pilot’s readiness for flight. Students learned how factors such as illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, and emotion can impact decision-making and safety. By introducing these concepts early, campers gained an appreciation for the responsibility that accompanies aviation.
Shared Values
At DreamFlight Charities, we believe aviation is one of the most powerful tools for inspiring young people to dream bigger, think critically, and pursue opportunities they may never have considered. Experiences like 4-H Summer Camp provide an ideal environment to spark curiosity and introduce students to pathways in aviation, aerospace, engineering, and technology.
Not only that, the values of aviation education align naturally with the Four H’s that have guided generations of 4-H members:
- Head: Aviation challenges students to think critically, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
- Heart: Flight fosters confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and a commitment to serving others.
- Hands: Whether conducting a preflight inspection, operating a drone, or building technical skills, aviation provides meaningful hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to encourage others through flight.
- Health: Safe flight operations require personal wellness, sound judgment, and healthy habits – principles reinforced through tools like IMSAFE.
As we reflect on an incredible week with campers from across the region, we are grateful for the opportunity to share the wonders of flight with the next generation. DreamFlight Charities remains committed to creating pathways into aviation and helping young people discover that the sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning.
