Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

A Private Pilot Certificate requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight training; 20 with an instructor and 20 hours of solo-flight time. Typically, students take anywhere between 60-80 hours on average to complete their training.

To shorten training times, we recommend a frequent and consistent training schedule.

In addition to training in an actual cockpit, students must receive dedicated ground school to teach the basic principles, procedures, and regulations of flight.

Before earning a Private Pilot Certificate, students must pass the FAA knowledge test as well as an oral examination to display proficiency in such areas.

As with anything, there are certain risks associated with flight/flight training. FAA regulations and procedures are designed to promote a greater sense of awareness and safety while ensuring that pilots all have a sufficient level of knowledge and skill to pilot an aircraft.

Add to this the many redundant components of aircraft systems (engine, electrical, etc.) and emergency training throughout the flight training experience.

Programs & Services

DreamFlight Charities hosts a variety of discovery events throughout the year (see our event calendar), but you can also reach out to us directly to see about scheduling an individual discovery flight.

Discovery flights with one of our partnering flight schools typically cost around $65 at one of our pre-planned discovery events, or $85 for individual flights. Prices are subject to change without notice.

For our pre-planned discovery events, flights typically include a multi-legged flight plan with students swapping seats at each stop. Along the way, students will receive dedicated flight instruction from a partnering Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) for around 20-30 minutes of the flight.

Individual discovery flights typically remain in the local area, but with the same 20-30 minute instructional time.

DreamFlight Charities’ flight training scholarships offer up to $6,000 in training through one of our partnering flight schools. Upon selection, orientation will detail how far this funding will take a student in their training based on their training frequency and consistency.

We realize that students learn at various rates and capacities, so the amount of training covered by the scholarship may vary by student.

To apply for one of DreamFlight’s training scholarships, students must complete a flight through one of our discovery events or by scheduling an individual discovery flight with DFC.

In rare cases, DreamFlight Charities may accept input from outside flight schools and/or flight instructors for discovery flights facilitated outside of our organization.

Upon registration, students will receive a link to our online application, but will also need to provide two references (further instructions provided in the application). Applications are not considered active until a discovery flight is completed and references are received.

Student applications remain on file until the student turns 19 years of age. Students may also opt to renew or update their application at no extra cost.

To remain in good standing, students must be able to obtain a 3rd Class Medical Certificate, achieve a passing score on the Private Pilot Written Exam, and commit to a regular and consistent training schedule.

Upon potential selection, DreamFlight representatives will share further details on these expectations with both the student and their parent(s)/legal guardian(s).

Our AVCamp events vary, but typically include ground school instruction, time on one of our mobile flight simulators, and presentations from various industry professionals. AVCamp opportunities may also be used to log actual ground instruction (see specific event details for more information).

Simply contact us and we will be happy to see how we can work to bring our resources and programming to your local community. Typically, our AVCamp program works best in connection with a local school or airport.

Our simulators are extremely mobile and utilize Microsoft Flight Simulator. While they are certainly suitable for building interest in aviation and reinforcing learned concepts from our ground school components, they are unfortunately not certified for logged time.
