The financial cost for flight training can be a significant barrier – something that we are committed to breaking down here at DreamFlight Charities as we look to open doors for the next generation of aviators. Our Flight Training Scholarships provide an incredible opportunity for students to take their first steps toward becoming a pilot. This post will guide you through the process, from the initial discovery flight to reaching the milestone of solo flight.
Step 1: The Discovery Flight Your First Taste of Aviation
In order to apply for our scholarship opportunity, students are encouraged to attend one of DreamFlight’s Discovery Events or schedule their own individual discovery flight. This introductory flight experience allows students to sit in the cockpit alongside a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI), get hands-on experience with the aircraft’s controls, and see firsthand what flight training entails.
A discovery flight isn’t just about the thrill of flying – it’s a crucial step in helping students determine if aviation is the right path for them. It also allows us to determine the comfort level of the student in the cockpit, teachability, and margins of success, should they be selected for this unique opportunity. Following the flight, students interested in pursuing a scholarship will be provided access to our application for consideration. All applications are kept on file until the student reaches 19 years of age, with no need to participate in an additional discovery flight.
Step 2: Application & Selection Process
After completing a discovery flight, students are eligible to apply for DreamFlight Charities’ Flight Training Scholarship. The application process includes:
- Providing basic contact, household, and income information.
- Answering brief essay questions about perceived strengths and weaknesses, interest in aviation, and extracurricular activities.
- Providing letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or community leaders.
- Attending a formal student orientation (if selected) with members of DreamFlight and the flight school through which the scholarship will be facilitated.
During student orientation, selected students will also have the opportunity to meet their instructor, develop their training schedule, and ask any pertinent questions about training expectations and requirements.
Step 3: Ground School TrainingBuilding the Foundation
Once selected and through orientation, scholarship students begin their aviation journey with ground school training, which is primarily completed through the Cessna Training App. This self-paced, yet structured course covers topics such as:
- Principles of Flight
- Aircraft Systems and Performance
- Navigation and Airspace Regulations
- Meteorology and Weather Interpretation
- Aviation Safety and Communication
This ground school portion is designed to prepare students for the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam. To supplement their students, students also participate in weekly ground school sessions with a CFI, who implements training on certified flight simulators to further instill discipline and procedures. Overall, the process takes around 10 weeks and will set the student up for even greater success when they finally reach the cockpit.
Step 4: Medical CertificationGetting Cleared to Fly
Before students can begin their flight training, they must obtain a 3rd Class Medical Certificate. This can easily be accomplished during the ground school training window, with medical clearance ensuring that aspiring pilots meet physical and mental health standards required for safe flight operations.
To obtain this certificate, students must schedule an exam with an FAA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), with the exam itself similar to a standard physical while accounting for aeromedical concerns. Receiving this certification is a critical milestone in the process, as it confirms that students are fit to proceed with flight training.
Step 5: Flight TrainingTaking to the Skies
With ground school completed and medical clearance in hand, students can now transition to the most exciting phase: flight training. During this stage, students will work with CFIs to gain real-world flying experience. Training flights focus on mastering:
- Basic Aircraft Control and Maneuvering
- Takeoffs and Landings
- Navigation Skills
- Emergency Procedures
- Radio Communications
Scholarship funds are typically designed and of the amount to take students close to their first solo flight, a major accomplishment in any pilot’s journey. At this point, students fly an aircraft alone for the first time, demonstrating confidence and competence in handling the aircraft without an instructor on board.
Step 6: Next StepsContinuing the Journey
Although our scholarships support students to nearly their solo flight, the aviation journey doesn’t end there! Many students continue working toward obtaining their Private Pilot Certificate by seeking additional flight hours through personal funding, sponsorships, or other aviation scholarships. When funding allows, DreamFlight Charities has also been known to offer extended scholarships to further enable students to pursue their dreams of flight.
