Take Off at the Run the Runway 5K

Danville, KY – DreamFlight Charities invites runners, aviation enthusiasts, and community supporters to lace up their shoes and take off for a unique experience at the Run the Runway 5K on Saturday, June 21st, at the Danville-Boyle County Airport (DVK).

This one-of-a-kind race allows participants to run or walk directly on the airport’s active runway and taxiways, offering an exciting opportunity rarely experienced by the public. Runways will be closed with the event starting at 8:00 am (no rolling start) and an even higher purpose in mind: fueling the dreams of next-generation aviators.

Proceeds from the event will directly support DreamFlight Charities’ aviation outreach programs including discovery flights for students, aviation camps, flight training scholarships, and dedicated STEM education support. These programs are specifically designed to break down barriers to aviation careers and inspire Kentucky youth – both within and outside of the cockpit.

Established in 1937, the Danville-Boyle County Airport – affectionately known as Stuart Powell Field – has long been a vital part of Central Kentucky’s aviation landscape. With its convenient location, continually upgrading facilities, and strong community partnerships, DVK continues to serve as a hub for general aviation, flight training, and economic development.

Statewide, Kentucky’s aviation industry is soaring, with more than 50 public-use airports, an expanding network of aerospace manufacturers, and a growing need for pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, and drone operators. In fact, aviation is one of the fastest-growing job sectors in the Commonwealth, offering high-wage, high-skill careers for the next generation.

“Kentucky is known for bourbon, horse racing, and its contribution to automotive manufacturing. We hope to highlight the Commonwealth’s role in advancing the aviation industry but truly see flight as a transformative tool that we can use in shaping the worldview of Kentucky’s youth,” shares DreamFlight’s Executive Director, Drew Underwood. Partnering with industry leaders and educators, the charity looks to further build awareness and open doors for students across the state – starting with events like this 5k.

Participants can register here or learn about other upcoming events by visiting DreamFlight’s event calendar at www.dreamflightcharities.org. All runners will receive a race medal, post-race celebration, awards, with the course scattered with static aircraft displays. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available for local businesses and aviation supporters who want to invest in the future of Kentucky’s aviation industry while gaining visibility at a high-profile community event.
