In a corner of south-central Kentucky, the hum of propellers and the thrill of lift-off became more than just a fascination for a group of middle and high school students – it became a personal experience. DreamFlight Charities recently completed its latest AVCamp at Taylor County Airport, bringing a week of aviation discovery, STEM education, and hands-on flight experience to Campbellsville students who may have never imagined themselves in the pilot’s seat.
For DreamFlight, this camp was more than a one-time event – it was a step toward reviving aviation interest in a region rich with potential. Through classroom sessions, simulator training, and real-time in the sky with certified flight instructors, students explored what it truly means to take flight while learning about Kentucky’s vast aviation industry. And in the process, they glimpsed futures they may not have previously thought possible.

Lifting Off: What Students Learned
Each evening of this unique AVCamp experience was filled with engaging ground school instruction designed to lay a strong foundation in flight science. Camp participants dove into the essential topics every pilot must understand, the four forces of flight, aircraft control surfaces, cockpit instrumentation, and the structure of the traffic pattern. These interactive sessions were guided by experienced aviation professionals, bringing theory to life with stories from their own time in the skies.
Students learned how lift, weight, thrust, and drag affect an aircraft in flight while examining how ailerons, elevator, and rudder help manipulate these forces and maneuver an airplane through the skies above. They decoded airspeed indicators, altimeters, and heading indicators, putting their instruments to use in navigating the traffic pattern, with the week ending with an introduction to various navigational tools available to a pilot.
Most importantly, these young learners were empowered to ask questions, make connections, and start seeing aviation not as something distant or inaccessible, but as a real opportunity for their own lives.

Simulated Skies & Real Word Confidence
To reinforce each lesson, students had access to DreamFlight’s mobile flight simulators. These are more than educational tools – they’re windows into what it’s like to operate an aircraft under various conditions. After learning new concepts in ground school, students would put their knowledge into action by taxing, taking off, and navigating simulated airspace over Taylor County.
For many, the simulators were their first opportunity to see themselves as pilots. With guided instruction, students practiced entering the traffic pattern, flew cross-country routes, and worked through various challenges. These soft skills – so essential in aviation – will serve them well regardless of the career paths they ultimately pursue.

Taking the Controls: Discovery Flights
But nothing compared to the moment each student stepped into a real cockpit.
As a capstone to their week of training, each participant took part in a discovery flight, joining a certified flight instructor for a multi-leg route across Kentucky’s skies. With hands on the yoke and eyes on the horizon, students were guided through the various phases of flight, applying everything they had learned in ground school and simulator training.
For many, this was a life-changing experience – and it’s the reason why we do what we do. By opening the cockpit to students who might not otherwise have this opportunity, DreamFlight is creating a powerful new pipeline for the aviation industry – one filled with passion, curiosity, and potential.

Removing Barriers
Taylor County and the surrounding areas once had a stronger aviation footprint, with a local district having been home to a thriving aviation education program. Over time, however, these programs faded. DreamFlight Charities sees its work in Campbellsville as part of a larger mission: to reignite interest in aviation, not only among students but across the broader community.
With AVCamp as a model, DreamFlight hopes to build lasting relationships with local educators, civic leaders, and aviation stakeholders in the region. The goal is clear: to establish regular aviation programming that combines various aeronautical aspects to supplement local STEM education, eventually leading to the return of formal aviation coursework in schools.
The response to this initial camp has been overwhelmingly positive. From students, parents, the support of the local airport board, and the broader Campbellsville community, it’s clear that the desire is there. The next step is to build on that momentum and turn short-term inspiration into long-term infrastructure.

Looking Ahead
AVCamp at Taylor County Airport was more than an afterschool camp – it was a spark. It proved that when young people are given the tools, training, and opportunity, they can rise to incredible heights. It demonstrated that aviation still captures the imagination of students. And it showed what’s possible when a community comes together to support the next generation.
DreamFlight Charities is committed to growing that spark into a flame. With continued support from donors, volunteers, and local advocates, we believe Campbellsville can become a hub for aviation education once again – equipping young people not only with knowledge, but with hope, purpose, and direction.
As the sun sets over Taylor County’s runways, we look forward to what’s next – more camps, more discovery flights, and more stories of students who found their wings thanks to a single opportunity like this. Here at DreamFlight Charities, we don’t just teach kids how to fly. We teach them that the sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning.
